Hi, Sir Paolo, I'm an amateur comic artist myself and I've heard of your works but haven't had a chance to extensively read and look through them. I appreciate your work a lot though, it's easy to see how your comics are popular with lots of Pinoy readers.
I have a question lang po. The last few months I've been working on a comic series also featuring Pinoy superheroes - although I haven't sold any comic strips/books yet, right now I'm still developing my ideas. Examples of my work on the proposed series can be found here: [link][link][link] [link] I showed these works to some friends, and they told me it was a bit similar to your Filipino Heroes' League series. Until then I wasn't aware the FHL comic existed; although I did hear rumors here and there that you were doing something like this, I didn't know what the comic was like. My main concern is that I don't accidentally copy your concepts, since we're both talking about Pinoy superheroes facing the difficult, Third World realities of serving a Third World country. I understand however - correct me if I'm wrong - that your FHL isn't a government agency, while mine is (it's called the "Bureau of Superheroes"). Again, I'd hate to be accused of plagiarism, so I thought I'd tell you upfront whether I'm skirting too close to your ideas. And if so, I'd very much welcome if you could offer suggestions on how to make my own superhero comic more unique in its own right. Kudos to your work once more! I hope to read your comics and meet you in person soon.

Hi Mirisu92! I can't really judge whether or not our ideas are similar or not. Why don't you read my comic book - you can find it in National Bookstore - and decide for yourself? All the best!
Thanks! I wish I could buy it, but I'm overseas right now, studying in the US. I could wait to buy it when I return in May, or - you sent a link to a preview on my Facebook page - I could go look online. I'll read through it soon as I can. (Or if I get a Kindle Fire … is it compatible with the Kindle?)
Meanwhile, I'll just tell you the premises of my proposed series, since there's probably not enough details in my sketches to flesh out the full concepts.
Here's one major possible difference. Does the Filipino Heroes' League officially work for the government? There's a difference between being called upon by the politicians in times of crisis, and actually working as a government employee. My Bureau of Superheroes effectively turns my own supers into government employees - so taxpayers actually provide for their salaries. If your supers don't have formal jobs in public service, then I could say we have different concepts in that respect. But if they do, well, I guess I could try to change something with my ideas.
Although if you think about it, our ideas might still be compatible. Let's say your FHL supers aren't already government workers. One scenario for a future, crossover-style comic, is that the FHL could officially register with the Bureau, for example. All employees of the Bureau of Superheroes are basically duty-bound to protect and serve the Filipino people and keep law and order, just like the Armed Forces or the police. (Of course, whether the supers actually respect and uphold the Bureau's mission is another story.)
Speaking of which, does your FHL act like most Filipino politicians - that is, they're corrupt, arrogant, narrow-minded, and won't hesitate to kill muckraking journalists or constituents of rival Local Government Units? If they don't, and they're more honest or sincere with their work, I guess that's another difference, since I'll be drawing/writing mostly about supers who behave for the most part like trapos. I'm envisioning supers who build basketball courts (by hand) with mayors' pork barrels, supers who assassinate their journalist-critics, supers who demand bribes from motorists … and yes, supers who piss on "BAWAL UMIHI DITO" signs.
Although I will also draw some supers who are more idealistic, which I understand is fairly difficult given they're working for a rather incompetent and corrupt government agency (which is basically what the Bureau of Superheroes is).
Hope that helps. Thanks!

Hi! I'm Raymond Soriano from Good News. I tweeted you po, I hope you've read it. Anyway, we are asking if we could interview you po for our program. It's a taped interview po about the success of Filipino graphic novels nowadays. We are going to interview Gerry Alanguilan and Budjette Tan on Friday po.
My friend and I went to National Bookstore after school and I saw your graphic novel. I got really excited about it so I decided to buy it without a second thought. I owe my friend some money though. Hahahaha. I finished reading it last night and it was so awesome. I think it's really fantastic and amazing. I'm really inspired with what you're doing and I hope everyone in the Philippines, especially the youth will too. Even though I'm a girl, I've always loved comics like Batman and stuff, but I've always wondered where to buy Filipino comics but could never find any and those I find are usually in Tagalog, and I have a hard time understanding Tagalog. I'm also really nationalistic so I was really glad to see your kind of comic. I was even more relieved when I saw that it was in English, coz I'm really not good in Tagalog. I'm from Cebu so I speak Cebuano. Anyway, I can't wait to buy and read the next issue. I'll be sure to bring extra money whenever I go to a bookstore. I really support your work.
